Let the big dog eat: K9 runs over Broncos

Kenneth Walker III carried twenty-three times for 173 yards and scored twice as Kansas City beat Denver 31–10 — the most rushing yards by a Chief since Jamaal Charles in 2012, and one yard fewer than the Broncos managed as an entire team. The longest went sixty yards on fourth-and-one. Patrick Mahomes, playing his first game since tearing two ligaments in his left knee in December, threw for two scores and ran in a third.

The recap

NFL

ResultK9 goes for 173 and two scores, and Mahomes is back.
Kansas City Chiefs31 – 10Denver Broncos

Walker 23 carries for 173 and two touchdowns, including a 60-yard run on fourth-and-one, plus three catches for 18 — 191 from scrimmage, more than Denver managed as a team. Mahomes 15 of 27 for 184 with two touchdown passes and a 15-yard rushing score, in his first game since tearing an ACL and LCL in December.

New York Yankees8 – 3Minnesota Twins

A three-run shot off A.J. Minter in the eighth, 415 feet — his first since 24 May and his first since returning on 8 September from a stress fracture in his right ribcage. The berth was clinched while Spencer Jones was batting, when Toronto lost in Detroit.

ResultFourteen straight Octobers, and Skubal barely broke stride.
Los Angeles Dodgers4 – 1Cincinnati Reds

Skubal seven innings, three hits, no runs, nine strikeouts on ninety pitches. Tucker's fifteenth home run, his third in five games, and a two-run shot from Teoscar Hernández. Elly De La Cruz spoiled the shutout with a 457-foot solo homer off the bullpen in the ninth.

Soccer

ResultLeeds take Newcastle apart and go third.
Leeds United4 – 1Newcastle United

A deflected opener on 32 minutes, then Bogle, then Calvert-Lewin on the stroke of half time and Okafor just before the hour; Touré late. Newcastle's first defeat of the season and Matthias Jaissle's first as their head coach.

The number

13,057career receiving yards — second among tight ends, past Jason Witten

Travis Kelce went by Jason Witten on Monday night and is now second all-time among tight ends in receiving yards. The catch that did it was a 59-yarder on third-and-six in the third quarter, and it was his longest reception since 2021 — which is the part worth sitting with. A career record was passed on a play he had not made in five years.

The rest of his night was three catches for 71. In a game where Kansas City handed it to Walker twenty-three times and ran for 220 yards, the tight end who has been the centre of this offence for a decade was a bystander with one big play in him. That is a live consideration for anyone pricing his receiving props this season: the counting stats keep climbing because he is still out there, but the target share is being handed to a running back on a three-year, $45m contract. A milestone reached on an outlier play is not the same as a player at his peak, and the market will take a few weeks to tell the difference.

Milestone and the 13,057 figure from ESPN, Athlon and Yardbarker; the 59-yard catch and its third-and-six situation from Yardbarker. Kelce's three catches for 71 and Kansas City's 220 rushing yards are from the Bleacher Report box score, corroborated by NBC.

Today’s picks

Espanyol+200 · FanDuel0.5u

Espanyol have the better of it on form and on history: seven points from five against Rayo's four, and four wins in the last five meetings. Rayo have conceded fourteen in five, the worst record in the division, and are missing six — Batalla with a fractured tibia, Luiz Felipe and Vertrouwd, Palazón and Nteka, and De Frutos suspended after an appeal was dismissed. THE CAUTION IS THE VENUE, AND IT CUTS AGAINST THE READ. This is at Butarque in Leganés because the Community of Madrid suspended Rayo's use of Vallecas after a safety audit, with works running two to six months. But Butarque is Rayo's designated temporary HOME, not a neutral ground: they keep home-team status and their season-ticket holders have been relocated there. The advantage is reduced, not removed, and the bet is weaker than a neutral site would make it. Two smaller cautions. The most recent meeting was Rayo 1-0 Espanyol in April, so the 4-of-5 record is real but front-loaded with older results. And Espanyol have played two away games all season, winning one and losing one — there is almost no away form here to lean on, in either direction.

6-LEG PARLAY+540 · FanDuel1u
  1. Los Angeles Dodgers -1.5 −1.5-144
  2. Yoshinobu Yamamoto — strikeouts over 6.5 +6.5-250
  3. Milwaukee Brewers-260
  4. Jacob Misiorowski — strikeouts over 6.5 +6.5-400
  5. Philadelphia Phillies-220
  6. Cristopher Sanchez — strikeouts over 5.5 +5.5-280

The read is the best teams and the best pitchers, and the pitching half of it holds up. Yamamoto has cleared 6.5 strikeouts in each of his last five starts (10, 8, 8, 9, 9) and in six of ten. Sánchez has cleared 5.5 in eight of his last ten. THE FIRST CAUTION IS WHAT THE TICKET COSTS. The six legs multiply to +710; FanDuel priced it +540. That 170 cents is correlation and margin, and it is being charged because three of the six legs are same-game pairs — Dodgers run-line with Yamamoto's strikeouts, Brewers with Misiorowski's, Phillies with Sánchez's. Those move together, so the book will not let them multiply out. Break-even goes from 12.3% at the product to 15.6% at the price actually taken. THE SECOND CAUTION IS MISIOROWSKI, WHO IS THE WEAKEST LEG AND PRICED LIKE THE STRONGEST AT -400. He has cleared 6.5 in only two of his last five — three consecutive six-strikeout starts inside that run — against five of ten across the longer sample, so the trend is down. He is at 161.1 innings, roughly twenty past last season's career high; Milwaukee clinched on 11 September, have managed his innings deliberately all year with a shortened start and extra rest, and he comes in on seven days' rest. No cap has been published, so this is a pattern rather than a reported number, but it is the pattern of a team protecting an arm it does not need. And Sánchez's eight-in-ten hides the two misses being his two most recent starts, at three and five strikeouts. Six legs at a 15.6% break-even is the shape that has burned this ticket before: the legs are individually reasonable and one of them dying is the likeliest single outcome.

Vinicius Junior — anytime scorer+105 · FanDuel1u

THE CAUTION COMES FIRST BECAUSE IT CONTRADICTS THE READ: Vinícius has one goal in six appearances this season, across 530 minutes. He is priced +105, second shortest on the board behind Mbappé at -240, which is a price for a player scoring freely rather than one who has scored once since August. The case for goals in the game is real but thinner than it looks. Elche are nineteenth, winless, and have conceded eight in two home games — except one of those was 0-5 to Barcelona, and they finished last season on a seven-match unbeaten home run. Two fixtures is not a defensive record, it is two fixtures. The rest is rotation risk. José Mourinho is expected to shuffle the side with a derby on Sunday and a Champions League win over Inter just played; Vinícius is reported fit and expected to start, but that is a predicted eleven and not a team sheet. Madrid are without Militão, Mendy and Rodrygo, which at least removes one forward competing for the same minutes. Worth saying plainly: an anytime-scorer market is a one-sided list of Yes prices with no No beside it, so there is no de-vigged fair number to check this against. The +105 carries the book's full margin and nothing on the board contradicts it.

Half PPR — 0.5 a reception, 1 per 10 rushing or receiving yards, 1 per 25 passing, 6 a rushing or receiving score, 4 a passing score, −2 an interception, −2 a fumble lost. Computed from the stat lines rather than lifted from a leaderboard: FantasyPros scores an interception at −1 and applies no penalty for a missed field goal, so their totals differ from these by exactly those amounts. Only four tight ends and seven receivers cleared 20 points, so those columns run short rather than being padded. D/ST and kickers are standard scoring; four defences are unresolved at the margin and none of them are in the top eight.

Chicago lead Cleveland by a game with the tiebreaker banked, while the American League West sat still with Houston and Texas both idle. The board itself, live on FanDuel this morning: Rams +600, Bills +900, then Seattle and Baltimore at +1100 and Kansas City and San Francisco at +1400. Philadelphia, Detroit and Cincinnati are all +1700, and the Chargers have fallen back to a share of +2000 with Chicago, Houston and New England.

The movement column above is BetMGM, not FanDuel, and it needs its caveat said out loud. BetMGM is the only book publishing a clean before-and-after pair around week one, and that capture was taken on Monday afternoon — so it does not contain Monday night, and Kansas City and Denver are stale in it. FanDuel and BetMGM also disagree about the Chargers: BetMGM has them +1700 to +2500, FanDuel only +2000 to +2000. When two books differ that much on the same fortnight, the honest reading is that one of them was slow, not that a real edge has appeared.

What the risers have in common is that the market had them cheap and one Sunday was enough to notice: San Francisco won 27–7 in Melbourne, Arizona went to SoFi as nine-and-a-half-point underdogs and won outright, the Giants beat Dallas. The fallers are the reverse and more brutal — Tennessee lengthened fivefold after losing at home to the Jets, Cleveland and Miami nearly as far. One week of football moved Miami from a 350-1 shot to a 1000-1 one, which is a price that has stopped being a forecast and started being a shrug.

Tomorrow

Wednesday opens the Europa League league phase with Milan against Benfica and Sunderland against AZ Alkmaar, and the US Open Cup semifinals run the same night. Baseball keeps going with two weeks left and three races that Monday barely touched. The Champions League does not return until 13 October, so this is the European week that has to carry itself.

The NFL came back and forgot the brakes

Chicago and Carolina combined for 96 points on Sunday, the highest-scoring opening-week game the league has played and a final score — 59–37 — that had never been recorded before, the 1,096th unique scoreline in NFL history. The Bears ran for 291 yards, with Caleb Williams accounting for four touchdowns, two through the air and two on the ground. Carolina gave up 552 total yards, and D'Andre Swift's 28-yard touchdown with 3:40 left was still adding to it.

Niners Run Riot at the 'G

The NFL played its first regular-season game in Australia and served up a one-sided affair. San Francisco arrived at the Melbourne Cricket Ground as road underdogs, led 10–7 at the break, and then pulled away from a Rams side playing a home game nineteen time zones from home. Brock Purdy threw three touchdowns; Matthew Stafford threw none and was intercepted.

Which is the whole story of the night, because half a point either side of that number was the difference between collecting and getting your money back. And the NFL plays in Australia tonight.
